Sunshine's Hip Baby has offered a selection of fairly-made and organic childrens clothing and accessories since 2005. We have always thought that if conventional shoppers had the chance to try organics, they'd like them! But as our conventional inventory got more glamorous, we thought we might be alienating that portion of our loyal customer base who just prefer understated, tasteful, quality ORGANIC things for their children. We thought they might like a more "earthy" shopping environment.
So Sunshine & Lyn Cowgill of Sunshine's Hip Baby and Emily Hays of Wildflower Boutique launched HipOrganics.com.
All-Organic-All-The-Time.
There are a lot of organic websites out there that really don't have that much organic merchandise. And it really isn't clear which items are organic and which aren't. We've decided that our intelligent customers will make good choices that suit their personal values if just given as much information as possible. So at Hip Organics, we provide origin, materials content and organic or fair trade certification status for all our products. We do have a few fair trade and less-than-100% organic items. But you have to start somewhere. Lots of companies are making wonderful things that are part or mostly organic. They may not be able to obtain all organic materials or ingredients, but still want to use as much organic material as possible. That's still better for us and for our environment. Basically, we believe that it's better to have less, nicer belongings than a whole bunch of junk that doesn't bring you joy. (Plus, it's easier to keep the house clean!)
Our goal, which we are working on all the time, is to offer the largest selection of organic products for children. We carry the widest selection of organic brands & designers anywhere. We are constantly re-examining our inventory and making choices and changes so that it will always reflect the best practices and most stylish items obtainable. The organic market is expanding, and we find more and better organic choices every day. Organic clothing is becoming more stylish, more colorful and more fun as more and more creative people get into the industry. More toys and accessories are now available that are made with organic and recycled materials and in a fair-trade environment.
I am always wondering why there aren't more larger-sized kids clothes in the organic market. What I constantly hear is that larger sizes don't sell. The public tells me that once their children are over a year, conventional is fine, it's cheaper, it doesn't matter. It does matter. We all drink the groundwater. We do care if our older children wear organic clothing. We buy it for ourselves, we buy it for our children. We want our children to have organic personal care products, toys, accessories too. So we've gone out of our way to find larger-sized organic things for children, not just babies, and more other ecologically-friendly children's products. Organic children's clothing, not just organic baby clothing. It has been difficult to get mass in the larger sizes, especially if we are to find fashionable, style-driven clothing. But it is out there, and we order it every season. As time goes on and more people begin to make the commitment to at least try some organic children's clothing, the market will expand and there will be more choices. And HipOrganics.com will be there to offer them.
